Be Active

This may be:

  • Phoning a relative or friend to see how they are
  • Connecting with yourself in quiet moments
  • Asking how someone is and really listening to the answer

Be Active

Regular exercise can increase energy levels and boost your mood, making it important for both physical and mental health. Small changes in levels of activity can make a big difference. Picking something you enjoy and suits your level of mobility and fitness will make you more likely to stick with it.

This may be:

  • Going for a walk
  • Doing a workout video
  • Doing some morning stretches
  • Doing some gardening

This may be:

  • Taking notice of sounds and sights outdoors

Learn

Learning new things and setting small challenges can improve your confidence and add fun to your day. It could be rediscovering an old hobby or interest, or trying something new like learning a new skill or signing up for a course. Set a challenge that you enjoy achieving. ("I want to", not "I have to")

This might be:

  • Researching something you're interested in
  • Doing a crossword puzzle
  • Cooking a new recipe

People who show a greater interest in helping others are more likely to rate themselves as happy; "the more we give, the more we receive".  When you feel good in the act of giving because you want to, not through duty or obligation, it enhances your own wellbeing, as well as those whose life you touch.

This might be:

  • Thanking someone
  • Doing something nice for a friend
  • Volunteering your time
  • Giving a smile or compliment

How can we increase happiness and what helps us feel sensations of happiness, joy and belonging? Many people believe happiness is a destination achieved through relationships, career status or material items; but happiness is actually a journey and something you can create on your own.

Your brain releases "happy chemicals" that drive the positive emotions you feel throughout the day: dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. See the document below for what each chemical does and how to release them.
